Why?
Properly installed and properly used, they are fine.

There needs to be some safety to either ensure the vehicle is in neutral, the ebrake is set, or both.

There are ways around it, which apparently this guy did. If you do something like this, you don't give your remote start to anyone else, or you have only yourself to blame.

This one clearly was not properly installed.
PROPERLY installed remote start arming procedure for a manual transmission vehicle:
1. park vehicle
2. place vehicle in neutral
3. set, release, and reset parking brake
4. turn off and remove key from ignition, vehicle will still be running at this time.
5. exit vehicle, ensure that you have everything that you need out of it.
6. close door, at this time, the vehicle will turn off and the system is armed.
7. if you open any door from this point until activating the remote start, you will have to redo the entire sequence to rearm the system.

Doing this will ensure that the parking brake is on, and the vehicle is in neutral. How does that not work?

Some people just aren't smart enough to use such technological advancements.

Another guy on the first page posted that he has a remote start on his manual and his car almost got put into the garage because it was started while in gear. Don't these people understand the definition of a neutral safety switch? If they have an auto starter hooked up right, then the car won't start unless it's in neutral.

lol - woops!

I installed an 'automatic only' remote starter on my 5-speed integra about 6 years ago. BUT, I installed magnetic switches on the shift mechanism which disable the start circuit when the stick is anywhere other than the neutral position.

I could never install a remote starter on our manual trans car... Because I will never leave the car in neutral with the brake set. It ALWAYS goes into either 1st or reverse.
