But Google is a little more powerful....... Anyone who joins will have a gmail account, and they scan all your messages to find out what you're interested in. Plus you've probably got a youtube account, which is now owned by google, so they scan all your activity there as well. Plus every time you use Google as a search engine, they retain that info as well.

When one company has that much info about you, it's never a good idea.

Like your bank, credit card company, utilities company, cell phone, cable, internet, insurance company...

I'm not happy about any of it, but it's become the payoff for living in the United States. Every company that gets their hands on your information sells of your information. A quick lexis nexis search will show you how little privacy you have anymore. Google's the easy target now, but there's a certain amount of control you have on what information is provided, especially on a social networking site that doesn't verify your validity. If they did, my Juan Estupido and Gunther Uberdyke accounts wouldn't exist.

Both Google and Facebook make their money from the information you give them. I prefer Google because so far they have been much more upfront with what information theyre gathering and what theyre doing with it and they give clear ways to opt out if you dont like it. Facebook has been much more shady. Plus, Google gives me free, useful, tools in exchange for my info (Android, Maps, Gmail, Earth, Reader...etc).

Is tin foil the fabric of this summer?

My Hotmail account is my main account. I only set up a Gmail account because Hotmail was down for a few hours a few years ago. So I don't get much sent there. Yes they would retain search info, thats just good business. What is it that you think they can do or will do?

You put in subjects that youre interested in and it gives you a list of RSS feeds about that subject or you can put in sites that you frequent and every time theres a new post/story it shows up on your Google Reader feed. Its a way to browse a bunch of different sites in one window.
