Yeah... uh looking for a efficient foul weather commuter, not a performance vehicle, for that price I could get a much newer more efficient and cheaper to repair vehicle.

If by "foul weather" you get within, say, 50 miles of any kind of salted road, stay away from the early VW's unless you dig driving Fred Flinstone style and you enjoy changing drive bits...
