While it isn't practical cooling/heating wise, I generally prefer two stories. And I like fireplaces too..

2-story here. I just like the "looks" of old Colonials, Victorians, and Southern style stuff.........Most ranches don't have any style when seen from the outside, IMO.

I don't like the thought of that either. Erik and I looked at split level and I really didn't care for it. Nice house, but not for us.

I am in OH and grew up with a fire place at Mom's and a wood burner at Dad's. What I wouldn't give to have either of them back now. The smell of wood burning is sooo good. We have a fire place, but it's in the freaking kitchen!

I voted 1 story just for the simple fact that the house I live in will probably be the house I die in so I need to be able to move around when I get old or when my knees act up.

We have a basement, but it's pretty much useless because it lets water come in at random. We prefer a walkout basement, but it's just not possible in this house. We had it at the apt and it was wonderful! It's how we got the bikes into the basement (their garage at that time).

Also, a 1 story with living alone would make me feel safer. There is less rooms for an intruder to hide, kind of.

Good luck house hunting.

2 story above ground..... with a basement as well.....

We live in a neighborhood with pretty large houses, and all of them are 2 stories above ground with large basements as well. I think they just look better....

I'd take a 2 story if it wasnt so expensive to just keep it cool/warm. Of cousre I'd close the vents in some rooms. Nothing like having a house and going from one room sweating to another freezing. LOL

I love having that extra floor in case it floods.

Have owned two single stories and a 2 story. I prefer 2-story because where I live you can't really get a big house in a single story. Just not enough land per plot. Although I do have to say I enjoy the benefit of having everything one floor, but we'll definitely rebuild this house into a 2-story in the near future.

one story usually mean u can wheel the bike in the living room during the winter... if you're blessed enough to have that sort of season.
