Swimming is a requisite to pass the scuba course. They make you swim approximately 200-yards or so.

However, in real life, you really don't need to know how to swim or even swim that well. There's a thing called a buoyancy control device (BCD) that keeps you afloat when you're on the surface and helps you maintain a certain depth when you're underwater.

And if you dive in cold water like California or places where it's cool enough to wear a wetsuit or a drysuit, you ain't sinkin' at all. These suits will float you like a cork.

do i need to take a scuba course before i can dive or can i just tag along with someone?
